Spring Cleaning for the Soul:
Decluttering More Than Just Our Closets
May 13, 2025 • By Dr. Arlonda Stevens
It’s finally Spring! The sun is shining, daylight is lingering a little longer, and flowers are beginning to bloom; all of which is a gentle reminder that the season of new beginnings is upon us. Spring is also a reminder that it is time for a spring cleaning.
Spring cleaning brings a special sense of clarity that we seem to have forgotten all year. In Spring, we reclaim the newness and renewal of the season. We capture the sudden burst of energy and transform it into cleansing our space.
Declutter Ourselves
We’re opening windows, scrubbing baseboards, washing windows, and sorting junk drawers, but what if we took spring cleaning a little deeper this year? What if we treated this season not just as a time to tidy our spaces, which is very important as our physical spaces are an outward manifestation of what’s going on inside, but as an invitation to declutter ourselves?

The 365 Commitment Challenge
Last December, I embarked on a 365 Commitment Challenge inspired by my Coach. I chose to get rid of at least one thing per day for 365 days. At nearly 150 days in, I only skipped a few days, and I have lightened my load and gotten rid of hundreds of things. And let me tell you, I feel lighter. Less stuff, less stress!
Throw Out Dusty Beliefs
For the midlife woman walking in her Renaissance, this isn’t just about donating old shoes or organizing the pantry. This is about clearing the inner clutter — the limiting beliefs, outdated stories, and worn-out behaviors that no longer serve who you are becoming in this season.
Let’s get real for a moment.
How many times have you told yourself, “I’m too old to start over.” “It’s too late for me to change.” “I have to keep the peace, even if I’m not at peace.”
Renaissance Women, these aren’t truths. These are dust-covered beliefs you’ve outgrown, yet they’re still taking up valuable mental and emotional space and keeping you stuck in previous seasons of your life and outdated versions of you.

Refresh Your Mind
This season, I invite you to clear out more than your closet. Start with your mind. Take inventory of the thoughts that are keeping you stuck. Notice the mental clutter that whispers you’re not enough, not ready, or not worthy, then challenge it. Clear it. Replace it with truth.
For me, I had to let go of the thought that everything must be perfect. This has been liberating. I am embracing “sloppy progress” and the idea that I can be brilliant and imperfect at the same time. Both can be true.
Recycle Old Habits and Roles
Next, sweep through your habits. Are there behaviors you’ve been clinging to out of comfort or fear? Patterns of overgiving, perfectionism, or procrastination? What would it feel like to let them go, not out of guilt, but from a place of self-honor and self-love?
And finally, dust off your spirit. Give yourself permission to release old roles you no longer need to play. Just because you’ve always been the fixer, the strong one, the silent one, doesn’t mean you have to stay in that script.
This is your time to rewrite the narrative and begin anew.

Make Space for New Beginnings
Spring is nature’s reminder that renaissance is real. New life comes after the shedding, and beautiful things bloom when we clear the way and make space to flourish.
So, as you fold sweaters and sweep corners, don’t forget to tend to the spaces within. Open your heart like you open the windows. Let in the fresh air of grace, truth, possibility, and peace.
And remember: decluttering isn’t really about creating an empty space. It’s about making room for new things, new thoughts, new behaviors. Creating space for what matters most. Peace. Clarity. Purpose. Joy. You!
At the Midlife Renaissance Collective, we believe every woman has the power to live with intention and vitality — but first, she must choose to release what no longer aligns. Spring is your sacred invitation to do just that.
Because a decluttered life makes room for a reimagined one. The next chapter of your story deserves nothing less.
“Spring cleaning is a chance to hit the reset button on your life.”
“Let’s spring clean our minds and homes.”
